Pathinaril family history
Pathinaril Family History
This is an attempt to create a family history of Pathinaril
family of Vaisiambhagom, Champakulam.
Pathinaril family originated from Puthoothara family at
Nedumudy. Puthoothara family had only
three daughters. Thomman, son of Chacko
Kanyakkonil of Vezhapra married one of these daughters, presumably the youngest
one and resided at Puthoothara as there were no male children to inherit the family
property. We do not know the name of this Mother of Pathinaril family, but the
name of the father was assumed from the known names of his grand children,
considering the tradition of Syrian Christians
that eldest son would be names after the name of paternal grandfather,
eldest daughter after paternal grandmother, second son after maternal
grandfather and second daughter after maternal grand mother. The reason for not
having an ancient family histpry for Pathinaril is due to the fact that the
Father of Pathinaril family came from Kanyakkonil family of Vezhapra who got
adopted to Puthoothara family. So, Puthoothara was not his real family. Sons of
this Kanyakkonil Thomman bought 16 para nilam- about 160 cents of paddy field
and moved to this farmland at Vaisiambhagom, their family became known as
Pathinaril Chira means the bank/boundary land of the 16 para nilam- the
Malayalam term for 16 is Pathinaru.
Puthoothara-
Kanyakkonil Thomman had 3 sons and 3 daughters.
The sons were Chacko, Varkey and Thomma.
Sons.
1 Chacko (1867-1935 )
2 Varkey
3 Thomma (1888-1960)
Daughters
1 Great Aunt
married to Kudamaaloor- (Palakakkode Outhakutty is her son/grandson)
2 Great Aunt
married to Kannady Chirayil family
3 Great Aunt
married to Amichakary Kondakasserry
These three brothers were traders. Their business was
selling paddy to the eastern parts of Kerala like Erattupetta, Palai,
Kindangoor etc and bring back hill products like tapioca, coconut, banana,
other tubers etc. They travel in big boats called kevu vallams with bamboo
sticks to push forwards in rivers and canals. It will take a few days to reach
their destination. They would have cooking utensils in the boat. Each trip
lasts for several days.
On one trip, Varkey passed away with cholera. He had only
one son Thomman. Varkey's wife was from Chirayil family from Kannady. Here, the
history is a bit complex. Note that one
of the sisters of these three brothers was marred to Chirayil family of
Kannady, and Varkey married the sister of his brother in law. (This sister
who was married to Kannady had a son known as Kochouthachayan of Chirayil.
Kochouthachayan had 3 sons and a daughter. Eldest son lived into family. The other sons are Rev Fr John chirayil CMI. and Antappan Chirayil who lives in USA now.) After Varkey’s death, his
wife and son Thomman were taken back to Chirayil family at Kannady and Thomman,
son of Varkey grew up there.
After the death of Varkey, Chacko and Thomma moved to
Vaisiambhagom and bought 16 para nilam.
That was the beginning of Pathinaril family. Thoma's eldest son Thomman stayed
at Puthoothara and the rest moved to Vaisiambhagom. The 16 para property at
Vaisimbhagoma was bought from the business of the three brothers Chacko, Varkey
and Thomma together. Varkey had also a share at Vaisimbhagom which was later bought by Thomma(one of the 3 brothers of Puthoothara-Chacko, Varkey and Thoma) by paying a price
as Thomman, Varkey’s son lived at
Kannady.
